A Note about Y-Data Cable Selection
A Y-Data Cable is used to connect three serial devices; typically a Traffic Controller, a Modem and an ENCOM radio. The Y-Data Cable not only physically connects the serial ports of these devices it is also specifically configured to correctly route the data; this is outlined below. There are typically 3 types of Y-Data Cables as detailed below.

In most cases if you select the cable type based only on the specified group of equipment, shown below, this will be the correct cable for your application. Cable configuration and data routing are outlined for informational purposes only. Y-Data Cables are available for other applications not outlined in this document. A detailed outline of the System configuration is required to determine the cable configuration requirements.

  1. Master Controller to Modem and Master Radio
This Y-Data Cable configuration has the Master Controller as the head end. The Master Controller serial data out is fed to the Modem and the Radio. The Master radio serial data out is fed to the Master Controller and this data is blocked from going to the modem.

This cable can be used to expand an existing System with the installation of the Master Radio at the Master Controller site and installing Wireless Local sites. Or this cable could be used for implementation of a new System with ‘Direct Connect’ sites and Wireless sites.

  2. Modem to Local Controller and Master Radio
This Y-Data Cable configuration has the Modem as the head end. The Modem serial data out is fed to the Local Controller and the Radio. The Master radio serial data out is fed to the Modem and this data is blocked from going to the Local Controller.

This cable can be used to expand an existing System with the installation of the Master Radio at a Local Controller site and installing Wireless Local sites. Or this cable could be used for bridging a damaged fiber or copper System.

  3. Remote Radio to Local Controller and Modem
This Y-Data Cable configuration has the Remote Radio as the head end. The Remote radio serial data out is fed to the Local Controller and the Modem. The Modem serial data out is fed to the Remote radio and this data is blocked from going to the Local Controller.

This cable could be used for the Remote site when bridging a damaged fiber or copper System. Or this cable could be used for implementation of a System with several ‘Direct Connect’ sites tied to one Wireless site.
